Why choose a life coach?

Recently, a lot of folks have been asking me about life coaches, specifically saying, "What is a life coach? Why would I go to a life coach? Is a life coach right for me?"

These are all great questions and I hope to give you a few good answers.

Life Coaching is quite different from traditional therapy in that coaching is now/future focused. Coaches want to understand what challenges you're having today and where you want to be tomorrow, so they can help you figure out how to get there. Many therapists are more past and pathology focused. They want to know what's happened up until this point, what happened when you were young, and they are particularly interested in figuring out your pathology, i.e., what's wrong with you.

This concern about pathology is why I specifically looked for and recruited life coaches to join my team. I wanted to find smart, insightful, caring people who were problem solvers to help me coach our clients towards better relationships. I didn't want someone to come in and tell folks what was wrong with them or what psychopathology they have. The reason being that nearly all of my clients are smart, doing well, and have no "mental illness."

I also found that coaches tend to be less critical and more focused on teaching new skills. Again, this is exactly what I wanted for my team members. I whole-heartedly believe that everyone deserves a good relationship and that everyone can have a good relationship, IF they know the proper skills to rebuild and repair the emotional connection in relationships. When I think about the ideal attributes of someone needed to transfer these skills to my clients, I think about someone who is a teacher, a cheerleader, a role model, and a friend.

For all of these reasons, I encourage you to work with a life coach. I am very proud to have Coach Edie as part of my team and I know she will take great care of you.

Warmly,
Dr. Kathy Nickerson
